Coast Day returns on Sunday, Oct. 7!
The University of Delaware’s festive Coast Day returns for a 36th year on Sunday, Oct. 7 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Beach enthusiasts, seafood lovers, and anyone curious about the wonders of the sea can visit the Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes, Del. on Coast Day to learn about the state’s rich marine resources.
This year’s theme, “Checking in on Our Coast,” will highlight how UD scientists, staff, and students are improving understanding of ocean environments and serving coastal communities. Coast Day attendees can interact with researchers, tour ships, try hands-on activities, and attend presentations on a range of topics.
At a special exhibit inside the Cannon Laboratory, visitors can check out various ways that scientists investigate ocean waters from the deep sea to the coastal marshes. A hydrothermal vent and underwater robot will be on display, along with interactive activities to explore. Children can dress up as marine scientists and consider the many career options related to ocean science.
Other family-friendly activities include an event-wide treasure hunt for answers to questions about the environment and Coast Day exhibits. Children can meet sea-dwelling animals such as horseshoe crabs and dogfish sharks at the critter touch tanks. Chemical magic shows by marine chemist George Luther are sure to captivate audiences. Kids who sign a safe boating pledge will receive a free life jacket while supplies last.
Everyone can enjoy live music, vendor displays, and seafood favorites showcased by local chefs at the Crab Cake Cook-Off and the Seafood Chowder Challenge. In the harbor area at 2:30 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard Search and Rescue is scheduled to demonstrate lifesaving skills. In the Smith Laboratory, presentations about studies involving penguins, sturgeon, sharks, and satellites will take place every half hour.
“Coast Day offers many fun opportunities to celebrate and learn about our natural environment,” said Nancy Targett, dean of the University’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment and director of Delaware Sea Grant.
Coast Day is sponsored by DuPont Clear into the Future, Overseas Shipholding Group, Inc., UTEC Survey Inc., WMDT—CW-3, Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
