Delaware’s sandy shores will soon be covered by hundreds of thousands of horseshoe crabs. These ancient creatures emerge from the water in May and June each year to spawn. The spring migration of red knots and many other shorebird species coincides with the horseshoe crab spawning season. The weary birds stop to feast on the nutritious horseshoe crab eggs.
