Seafood is a great low-calorie choice for a healthy diet. It’s easier to digest than red meats and poultry, and it’s full of proteins and vitamins. Follow these shopping tips to help keep this perishable menu item safe to eat. Whole fish should have bright, clear eyes that are often protruding, bright red or pink gills, firm yet elastic flesh, and shiny skin. Your purchase should feel cold, not cool, to the touch. And it shouldn’t smell “fishy.” The odor should be like that of a fresh sea breeze. Make it one of your last purchases, and no matter what time of year it is, if your trip home is more than an hour, pack the seafood on ice.
