On the Lookout

An American Oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus) patrols the marsh. This large shorebird is named for its ability to insert its long, bladelike bill into mussels, clams, oysters, and other shellfish, cutting the bivalves’ powerful muscles before the shells can close. Oystercatchers also feed on barnacles, snails, and fiddler crabs.

Oystercatchers were once abundant along the entire Atlantic coast, but hunting and egg collecting during the 1800s severely depleted their numbers. Today, habitat loss, human disturbance, pollution, sea level rise, and nest predation by raccoons, gulls, feral cats, and other animals keep oystercatcher populations at relatively low levels. The East Coast is home to only about 11,000 of the birds and Delaware lists the oystercatcher as an endangered species.
