Coastal Gems
The shallow waters and dense bottom grasses of Delaware’s Inland Bays — Rehoboth, Indian River, and Little Assawoman — provide habitat for many aquatic creatures and tourism and recreation opportunities for humans. However, polluted runoff can stress Delaware’s coastal waters. Delaware Sea Grant is working with local organizations and citizens to monitor pollution levels, restore native populations of shellfish, and ensure that these waters will be enjoyed by future generations.

4 – Independence Day
Recycling picnic goods and skipping fireworks, sparklers and other explosives (which damage the marine environment with pollutants and litter) can help maintain a healthy coast for many Fourth of July celebrations to come.
11 – World Population Day
The world’s population was estimated to be more than 6.8 billion in 2009. Experts project it will grow to more than 9 billion by 2050 or before. Delaware’s population is estimated at more than 880,000 and is expected to surpass one million by 2025.
12 – Birth of Henry David Thoreau, 1817
In celebration of this nature writer’s birthday, enjoy your natural surroundings by taking a walk in one of Delaware’s state parks.
24 – Delaware adopted its official state flag today in 1913
In the flag’s center, a ship symbolizes New Castle County’s shipbuilding industry and Delaware’s coastal commerce. A stroke of blue represents the Delaware River.
