Silent Invasion

The setting sun silhouettes a Delaware marsh. The tall plants are common reed (Phragmites australis), a perennial grass that is native to the United States and grown on every continent except Antarctica. In documenting the flora of the New World, early European naturalists described Phragmites as a minor wetland plant, usually confined to the upper elevations of wetlands and along the edges of ditches and ponds. Over the past half-century, however, there has been a rapid and widespread expansion of Phragmites into wetlands once dominated by other plants. This invasion disrupts the natural distribution and movement of plants and water in the wetland, which also can affect the ways that fish, birds, and other animals use the marsh.

The College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment and Delaware Sea Grant are conducting research and outreach about this marsh invader in efforts to control its spread and restore affected areas.
