Delaware Sea Grant Oceanography Merit Badge program

Delaware Sea Grant and the University of Delaware offer the state's only Boy Scout oceanography merit badge program. Conducted at our Hugh R. Sharp marine studies campus in Lewes, this four-hour program includes indoor and outdoor activities, including:

  • interactive "Oceanography 101" presentation
  • measuring water quality with hi- and low-tech methods
  • sampling and observing plankton
  • exploring a mini-oyster reef habitat
  • campus tour

Current program availability is below. Requests for the program are filled on a first come-first served basis. Program requests from larger groups of Scouts (8-15) may be scheduled in addition to the programs below, on a case-by-case basis. For more information, please read our UDaily article, and contact Marine Education Specialist, Chris Petrone.

To date, over 140 scouts have participated in this program, hailing from Delaware, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
