New Derelict Crab Pot Project Gaining Attention

Coastal Ecologist Kate Fleming and University of Delaware College of Earth, Ocean and Environment professor Art Trembanis are working this season to alert the community to the problems associated with lost or abandoned crab pots in Delaware’s Inland Bays. Fleming and Trembanis conducted research while the recreational blue crab season was closed to evaluate the potential scale of a problem and were concerned by their initial results.

The full story of their work so far is available at UDaily.

They also presented to the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee of the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays, which prompted this story on WRDE.

And Kate has recorded three 15 Second Science segments about derelict, or ghost, crab pots:

Why they are a problem

How she and Trembanis began their studies

How recreational crabbers can avoid contributing to the problem
