This Delaware salt marsh and the Artic and Antarctic don’t have much in common, but during winter months, ice can form on the marsh’s surface, giving it a “polar” look. Scientists in the University of Delaware’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment are working to better understand the role of sea ice in cold climates.
When not enduring below freezing temperatures at far-off field sites, they use computer technology, remote sensing, and telecommunications tools to track ice movement. Their work is helping to improve navigation in polar seas and track ongoing changes to ocean and coastal environments.
