Working aboard a research vessel is wet—but rewarding work. A Delaware Sea Grant-funded study by University of Delaware Professor Jonathan Cohen aims to analyze and quantify zooplankton species present in the Delaware Bay.  Zooplankton are millimeter to centimeter scale organisms that live in water. A diverse and ecologically significant group of animals, they range in size from small copepods the size of a grain of rice to large jellyfish.

This research builds on an earlier zooplankton study in the 1950s by Joanne Daiber, UD’s first female marine biologist. The team performs their research on a vessel named in her honor – the R/V Joanne Daiber. The vessel is designed to function in a range of habitats from the bay estuaries to the shelf break. It is truly a floating laboratory for scientists!
